In just six months since launching New Zealand’s first fully electric bus depot in Panmure, East Auckland, the site’s 35 new electric buses have collectively driven over one million kilometres and displaced more than 139 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
Kinetic is also celebrating the two-year anniversary of the electrification of Auckland’s CityLINK service, with the 11 buses clocking up a further one million kilometres and saving 125 tonnes of CO2 emissions entering the earth’s atmosphere.
Kinetic Head of NZ Calum Haslop says it’s incredible to see the tangible and immediate impact the zero-emission fleet is having on Auckland in a short amount of time.
“The electrification of the city’s bus network is helping Auckland work towards meeting its climate change goals, while also having an immediate impact on air quality creating a quieter, healthier urban environment for Auckland residents,” Mr Haslop says.
“Through our electric fleet in Panmure, this impact has surpassed expectations by covering a remarkable one million plus kilometres in just six months.
“These milestones are the first of many we will celebrate with Auckland Transport, Auckland Council and the local community as we accelerate the replacement of diesel buses and support Auckland’s Climate Action Plan.”
Through NZ Bus and Go Bus, Kinetic will have over 250 electric buses on the road by the end of 2024 across Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Tauranga.
In March, Kinetic welcomed New Zealand Green Investment Finance (NZGIF) to its finance lending syndicate to help further decarbonise the country’s public transport network. The announcement recognised Kinetic’s strategic vision and partnerships with government regulators and regional councils across the country.
Mr Haslop says Kinetic was committed to expanding its electric bus fleet across its New Zealand operations to meet growing community expectations and the government mandate for the full decarbonisation of urban buses by 2035.
“New Zealand is a clear leader in the decarbonisation of public transport and our teams are doing an amazing job working with our partners to deliver cleaner, greener bus services that prioritise environmental sustainability and drive better passenger outcomes,” he says.
“We’re prepared with adequate support from investors and our own strategic vision and sustainability goals to support rapid growth and investment in our depots, bus and infrastructure assets to ensure we meet the transport needs now and for future generations.”
As Australasia’s largest owner and operator of battery electric buses (BEB), Kinetic has 10 electric bus depots across the region supporting a zero-emission bus fleet growing to 300 in 2023.
Globally, Kinetic’s electric bus fleet is expected to grow to 1000 this year with operations in the UK, Europe and Singapore.
