Melbourne-based organisation, Left Write Hook, is one of 18 recipients to benefit from Kinetic’s recently launched, Moving Communities Fund.
With a $10,000 grant, Left Write Hook will deliver a transformative program for up to 10 participants, empowering survivors of child sexual abuse and complex trauma.
Founded in 2019, Left Write Hook is a peer-led organisation that combines trauma-informed boxing sessions with expressive writing workshops over an eight-week program.
This structure encourages a balance between physical movement and emotional expression, facilitating both the release of stored trauma and personal narratives.
Founder and CEO of Left Write Hook, Donna Lyon, said that this dual approach helps survivors process their experiences and build resilience in a supportive environment.
"We see incredible transformations in the people who do our program and it's such a privilege to support them through this growth journey,” she said.
Operating out of existing gyms across metropolitan Melbourne, Left Write Hook’s flagship training program can reach survivors in various communities.
Since its inception, Left Write Hook has delivered 18 programs across Melbourne, supporting over 120 survivors.
In addition to delivering its flagship program, Left Write Hook is involved in a research initiative investigating the effectiveness of their combined writing and boxing program compared to boxing-only intervention for survivors of abuse.
“By supporting more victims and survivors through our program, we’re able to gather evidence to prove the efficacy of the program and we look forward to being able to scale up our offering and broaden our impact.” Dr Lyon said.
Left Write Hook’s impact has been captured through its feature documentary which premiered at the Melbourne International Film Festival in 2024.
Exploring the journey of eight survivors, the documentary captures their transformation as they participate in Left Write Hook’s program and has inspired over 120 survivors to participate in the initiative.
Kinetic’s support will make an important contribution to enabling Left Write Hook to continue delivering their life-changing programs, furthering its mission to support survivors and build resilience.
